An e-commerce sites primary purpose to to sell you products. This is the most expensive type of site to develop and maintain, but has the potential to make you very wealthy.
"Birds of a feather flock together."These community type sites are generally a group of people with a common interest or goal, like car details or cancer survivors. The potential to meet new people safely, to discuss experiences, share tips and advice draws everyone with a common interest together.
Portal or gateway sites are for information distribution, usually a list of links to other sites. The data is tailored to suit a particular market (Vortal or Vertical Portal) or a horizontal portal which covers different areas or interests. News24.com
Social Networking Sites
SNS sites provide a means for people to communicate or keep in touch with family and friends. Social networking sites tend to share some conventional features. Most often create profiles containing various information, pictures and contact details about themselves. Users post blog entries, search for other users with similar interests, and share lists of contacts. In addition, user profiles often have a section dedicated to comments from friends and other users. Sites like Facebook and Blogger.com are probably the best examples.
Most likely your not here to build a search engine, but without sites like Google or Yahoo it would be near impossible to find anything on the web. It is however important that you have a basic understanding of how they work and why that is important to your website.
